How is the CO2 laser different?

The CO2 is a “fractional” carbon dioxide laser. This means that rather than “zapping” 100% of a treated region of skin, it zaps scattered tiny zones of skin, comprising a total of perhaps 25% of the treated region. Tiny treatment zones allows the recovery time to speed up, thereby enhancing results. Patients are usually fully healed within four to five days on average. This laser has been FDA-approved for treatment of fine lines, dark spots and acne scars.

Am I a good candidate?

Just like with other lasers, some people may be better candidates than others. If you have sun-damaged facial skin (freckling/brown spots, wrinkles, coarse texture) you may be a good candidate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people will feel some stinging and burning during the procedure and for several hours afterwards. A topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area for 45-60 minutes to help decrease the intensity of the treatment. The stinging and burning will usually subside in 1-2 days. You may take ibuprofen/acetaminophen or similar medications to minimize this discomfort.

Your skin will look red and swollen for 1-3 days following treatment. In rare cases, the swelling and redness may last for 1 week. After 1-2 days your skin will become tight, shiny and darken (sun tan look). On days 3-4 your skin will start to lift and peel around the mouth first, followed by the rest of face. It is very important to not pull or force the skin off.

We ask that you not apply anything to your face, except what your doctor recommended, until your skin has completely healed. You may wear makeup after that time.

In most cases, only one or two, but for deeper wrinkles and acne scars, three or more is recommended.

Common side effects from treatment with the CO2 Laser include the following: redness lasting for a few hours to a few days, swelling lasting for a few hours to a few days, tenderness during the treatment and immediately after, and peeling of the skin. Less commonly, you may have significant swelling lasting over one week, and hyperpigmentation (darker discoloration) or hypopigmentation (lighter discoloration). Rare side effects include blistering or scarring.

You’ll see improvement to skin quality within 3-4 weeks. Depending on severity of indications (wrinkles, pigment and scarring) for CO2 Laser treatment and completing the recommended treatments, you can see improvement in skin tone, texture, pore size and pigments for approximately 1-2 years. Your skin will continue to repair and heal for months after the last treatment. We recommend continuing to use prescription-strength skin care and receive facial treatments to continue to repair, restore, rebuild, exfoliate and stimulate.

  • Avoid sun exposure for approximately one week prior to your treatment. Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 to protect your skin. If you are spray-tanned, please exfoliate to help remove the tanning product in the treatment area.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, please notify staff prior to the appointment, so you may begin taking medication the day prior to the procedure.
  • Stop applying any “irritating” skin products, such as retinoids and AHAs, at least one week prior to treatment.
  • Please pick up any prescribed medications and other supplies (Arnica, white vinegar) prior to your appointment.
  • Eat a light breakfast the morning of your laser treatment.
  • Have someone available to take you home after your treatment, especially if you plan to take anxiety or pain medication prior to the procedure.
  • Arrive on time for your laser treatment with clean skin. Female patients should not wear any makeup/mascara, lotions, powders or perfumes on or around the areas to be treated. Male patients should shave the morning of their treatment but should not apply lotions or aftershave on or around the areas being treated.
  • If needed, bring your eyeglasses. Contact lenses should be removed prior to treatment.
  • Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes and shoes.
  • Prepare your post-care soaks: 2 tsp. of white vinegar in a quart of water (place in a pitcher in the fridge).
  • Bring a large hat with you to the visit.

What to remember: The moister you keep the skin, the better it will heal. Do not let it dry out; it will take longer to heal or could cause pigmentary changes to the skin.

  • Apply Repair cream every 2-3 hours for first 2 days. Thereafter, apply Repair Cream when skin feels dry or tight for at least 3 more days.
  • Cool compresses: Mix 2 tsp. white vinegar per 1 qt. water. Keep this mixture in the refrigerator. Apply a soaked gauze pad to one side of the face for 5 minutes, and repeat on the other side. (20, if the dots turn brown=dry). You can use compresses 4 times a day for comfort, itching, redness and healing.
  • A bag of frozen peas is okay to hold over the saran wrap to help with swelling.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and sunbathing.
  • Do not rub, pick, or scratch.
  • Avoid salty foods (to reduce swelling).
  • Avoid heavy exercise for 3 days.
  • Take pain medications as directed.
  • Do not apply makeup or sunblock, or other products besides what is listed above, for the entirety of the 3 days until you are seen for your follow-up appointment after the procedure.

Call our office immediately if you experience increased pain, fever, drainage or signs of infection or bleeding.
